The Breakfast Club (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Breakfast Club (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

The Breakfast Club (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/03/2010 Run time: 122 minutes Rating: R

The Breakfast Club (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. --Tom Keogh

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (20th Anniversary Edition)

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (20th Anniversary Edition) Review

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (20th Anniversary Edition) Overview

Director Terry Gilliam (Brazil) and an all-star cast including John Neville, Eric Idle, Oliver Reedand Uma Thurman deliver this tale of the enchanting adventures of Baron von Munchausen on his journey to save a town from defeat. Being swallowed by a giant sea-monster, a trip to the moon, a dance with Venus and an escape from the Grim Reaper are only some of the improbable adventures.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (20th Anniversary Edition) Specifications

Monty Python's Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. --Tom Keogh

It's a Wonderful Life (60th Anniversary Edition)

It's a Wonderful Life (60th Anniversary Edition) Review

It's a Wonderful Life (60th Anniversary Edition) Overview

George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all – and it’s Christmas! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn’t been for all of his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget suicide?

It's a Wonderful Life (60th Anniversary Edition) Specifications

Now perhaps the most beloved American film, It's a Wonderful Life was largely forgotten for years, due to a copyright quirk. Only in the late 1970s did it find its audience through repeated TV showings. Frank Capra's masterwork deserves its status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered work of Dickensian density. George Bailey (played superbly by James Stewart) grows up in the small town of Bedford Falls, dreaming dreams of adventure and travel, but circumstances conspire to keep him enslaved to his home turf. Frustrated by his life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to commit suicide on Christmas Eve. A heavenly messenger (Henry Travers) arrives to show him a vision: what the world would have been like if George had never been born. The sequence is a vivid depiction of the American Dream gone bad, and probably the wildest thing Capra ever shot (the director's optimistic vision may have darkened during his experiences making military films in World War II). Capra's triumph is to acknowledge the difficulties and disappointments of life, while affirming--in the teary-eyed final reel--his cherished values of friendship and individual achievement. It's a Wonderful Life was not a big hit on its initial release, and it won no Oscars (Capra and Stewart were nominated); but it continues to weave a special magic. --Robert Horton

The Wild Geese (30th Anniversary Edition)

The Wild Geese (30th Anniversary Edition) Review

If you are too sensitive about anti-gay issues, sexism, racism, or any other "isms," then this movie is not for you. It is a classic British war movie set during the so-called Bush Wars in Africa in the 1970s, during the heyday of mercenary activities in the region. What makes this movie amazing is its outstanding soundtrack by Roy Budd and the theme song, "Flight of the Wild Geese" by Joan Armatrading. It is a great was movie that may make you cry. One sad thing about the movie is that a remake is due to be released in 2011. I say sad because no actors can replace the four lead characters (Moore, Harris, Kruger, and Burton). More over, the new version is likely to be a politically correct movie, and this will cause it to loose its authenticity. As a black African, I enjoyed the authenticity, albeit politically incorrect nature of the movie. Highly recommended movie for war movie lovers.

The Wild Geese (30th Anniversary Edition) Overview

WILD GEESE - DVD Movie

The Wild Geese (30th Anniversary Edition) Specifications

Mixing action, humor, sentiment, and even a few righteous moral convictions, The Wild Geese is good, rousing fun. Released theatrically in 1978 (oddly, this 2005 DVD release is referred to as the "30th Anniversary Edition"), director Andrew V. McLaglen’s film depicts the adventures of a group of British mercenaries hired by a shady multinational corporation to free the benevolent leader of an African nation held captive by a ruthless dictator. Led by the caustic, no-nonsense Col. Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), these soldiers of fortune are all stout fellows out to earn a big payday and restore a good man to his rightful place of power (the underlying message of universal racial brotherhood is effective, if somewhat simplistic), and they do their job swiftly and efficiently... at least until they're double-crossed by their venal, perfidious employers, at which point the film becomes a tale of survival and revenge. The cast, which also includes Richard Harris, Roger Moore, and a host of other fine veteran actors, is first-rate, the story-telling efficient, the dialogue entertaining (with occasional bursts of profanity), and the action reasonably exciting and not overly graphic. And even if the pace is somewhat leisurely by new millennium standards (we're nearly an hour into it before the actual mission starts), The Wild Geese is a very enjoyable ride. Bonus features include a profile of producer Euan Lloyd and commentary by Lloyd, Moore, and journalist Jonathan Sothcott. --Sam Graham

Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition)

Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition) Review

I recently purchased a movie and it was defective. I feel guilty now but I wrote a bad review for the company. I never contacted them but I got an email where they refunded my money. I want to praise you for seeing my comment and acting on it. I will definitely keep you in mind next time I need to make a purchase. I just wish I knew how to go and delete the negative feedback I left earlier.

Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition) Overview

Nominated for nine Academy Awards , including Best Picture, Apollo 13 is now available in an incredible 2 -Disc Anniversary Edition with never-before-seen bonus materials. Produced by Academy Award winner Brian Grazer and directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard, Apollo 13 stars Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris in the inspiring and riveting story of the real-life space flight that gripped a nation and changed the world.

Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition) Specifications

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon

Scarface (Full Screen Anniversary Edition)

Scarface (Full Screen Anniversary Edition) Review

For Mature Audiences only! Not for children to see. This version runs 2 hrs. 49 mins. rated "R".
Not since The Godfather (Coppola Restoration) [Blu-ray] (1972) and The Godfather Part II (Coppola Restoration) [Blu-ray] (1974) (which also starred Al Pacino) has a motion picture shocked American audiences with its violence. Directed by Brian De Palma,Body Double (1984), this is a remake of Scarface (Universal Cinema Classics) (1932).
Antonio Montana arrives from Cuba in 1980 wanting to become powerful in his own way in Florida. He starts a riot and kills a man in tent city. With his other Cuban refugee friends, he gets further involved in cocaine deals, starts a drug cartel and becomes the most richest, notorious killer the state of Florida has ever seen.

This powerful film is known for its grotesque bloody and grueling violence and the numerous use of a certain adult curse word.

Cast includes: Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Pepe Serna, F. Murray Abraham, Manuel Padilla Jr, Robert Loggia, Michelle Pfeiffer, Miriam Colon, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Richard Belzer, Angel Salazar, Arnaldo Santana, Paul Espel, Mark Margolis.
Manuel Padilla Jr had a mustache in this film. He was in the shower scene.

This film did not receive any Academy Award nominations. 1983 was the year we saw Terms of Endearment, The Right Stuff (Two-Disc Special Edition), Tender Mercies, Fanny and Alexander (The Theatrical Version) - Criterion Collection.
The Miami Vice - Season One tv series debuts the next year.

Michelle Pfeiffer has a nice line during the sunken-bathtub scene, I think we can all agree with.
Oliver Stone wrote the screenplay.

I was not able to review the Bonus Features of Disc 2. However, their is a featurette where to can see the difference between the theatrical version and the edited television version.
DVD includes options of English, Spanish, French. Option of captions in English for hearing-impaired. Option of subtitles: Spanish and French.

Scarface (Full Screen Anniversary Edition) Overview

Pacino plays a ruthless Cuban gangster involved in a cocaine empire, in this violent crime epic inspired by the 1932 classic of the same title.

Scarface (Full Screen Anniversary Edition) Specifications

This sprawling epic of bloodshed and excess, Brian De Palma's update of the classic 1932 crime drama by Howard Hawks, sparked controversy over its outrageous violence when released in 1983. Scarface is a wretched, fascinating car wreck of a movie, starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of Miami's cocaine-driven underworld, only to fall hard into his own deadly trap of addiction and inevitable assassination. Scripted by Oliver Stone and running nearly three hours, it's the kind of film that can simultaneously disgust and amaze you (critic Pauline Kael wrote "this may be the only action picture that turns into an allegory of impotence"), with vivid supporting roles for Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Robert Loggia. --Jeff Shannon

Saturday Night Fever (30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition)

Saturday Night Fever (30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition) Review

Nineteen-year-old Brooklyn native Tony Manero lives for Saturday nights at the local disco, where he's king of the club, thanks to his stylish moves on the dance floor. But outside of the club, things don't look so rosy. At home, Tony fights constantly with his father and has to compete with his family's starry-eyed view of his older brother, a priest. Nor can he find satisfaction at his dead-end job at a paint store. However, things begin to change when he spies Stephanie in the disco and starts training with her for the club's dance competition. Stephanie dreams of the world beyond Brooklyn, and her plans to move to the big city just over the bridge soon change Tony's life forever. Watching Travolta shimmy across that dancefloor to that funky disco music, makes you realize that this movie is like no other, and the soundtrack features some of the best disco music ever made. It is, quite simply, amazing.

Saturday Night Fever (30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition) Overview

From John Travolta’s electrifying Oscar®-nominated* performance to the Bee Gees’ top 10 soundtrack to the unforgettable dancing, Saturday Night Feveris a movie sensation that captured the world’s attention like never before. Now catch the fever all over again with this 30th Anniversary Special Collector’s Edition that goes behind-the-scenes with special features on the history, culture and fashion of disco, the smash-hit soundtrack, an exclusive look at Hollywood legend John Travolta, and so much more. Now more than ever before, Saturday Night Fever is the one film that’ll make you feel like dancing.

Saturday Night Fever (30th Anniversary Special Collector's Edition) Specifications

Saturday Night Fever is one of those movies that comes along and seems to change the cultural temperature in a flash. After the movie's release in 1977, disco ruled the dance floors, and a blow-dried member of a TV-sitcom ensemble became the hottest star in the country. For all that, the story is conventional: a 19-year-old Italian-American from Brooklyn, Tony Manero (John Travolta), works in a humble paint store and lives with his family. After dark, he becomes the polyester-clad stallion of the local nightclub; Tony's brother, a priest, observes that when Tony hits the dance floor, the crowd parts like the Red Sea before Moses. Director John Badham captures the electric connection between music and dance, and also the desperation that lies beneath Tony's ambitions to break out of his limited world. The soundtrack, which spawned a massively successful album, is dominated by the disco classics of the Bee Gees, including "Staying Alive" (Travolta's theme during the strutting opening) and "Night Fever." The Oscar-nominated Travolta, plucked from the cast of Welcome Back, Kotter, for his first starring role, is incandescent and unbelievably confident, and his dancing is terrific. Oh, and the white suit rules. (Note: Saturday Night Fever was cut from its original R-rated version after its initial release in order to obtain a PG rating. The PG version is 11 minutes shorter and is missing parts of scenes and some street talk. Both versions are available on video.) --Robert Horton

War Games (25th Anniversary Edition)

War Games (25th Anniversary Edition) Review

Perfect casting, a first-rate script, and fast pacing all mesh extremely well in this cold war thriller. The screenwriters, Lasker, Parkes and Green, did an excellent job of taking some of the best elements of "Fail Safe" and a couple legendary Stanley Kubrick films and married them to a teenage thriller, all at the time when personal computer was just beginning to take off. Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy are never annoying in their roles, but the movie is truly brought to life by the perfomances by Barry Corbin as the salty General Berringer (nice to see the US Military portrayed in a positive light), and John Wood as the enigmatic Dr. Falken. Of course, Dabney Coleman is great as always. Great film. WarGames deserves a lot of praise for its simple but powerful message indicting nuclear weapons.

War Games (25th Anniversary Edition) Overview

Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) and Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club) star in this compelling drama filled with action, suspense and high-tech adventures! Featuring superb performances by Dabney Coleman and Barry Corbin, WarGames is "brilliant...funny...and provocative" (New York)a fast-paced cyber-thriller. Computer hacker David Lightman (Broderick) can bypass the most advanced security systems, break the most intricate secret codes and mastereven the most difficult computer games. But when he unwittingly taps into the Defense Department's war computer, he initiates a confrontation of global proportionsWorld War III! Together with his girlfriend (Sheedy) and a wizardly computer genius (Tony AwardÂ(r) winner John Wood), David must race against time to outwit his opponent...and prevent a nuclear Armageddon.

War Games (25th Anniversary Edition) Specifications

Cute but silly, this 1983 cautionary fantasy stars Matthew Broderick as a teenage computer genius who hacks into the Pentagon's defense system and sets World War III into motion. All the fun is in the film's set-up, as Broderick befriends Ally Sheedy and starts the international crisis by pretending while online to be the Soviet Union. After that, it's not hard to predict what's going to happen: government agents swoop in, but the story ends up in the "hands" of machines talking to one another. Thus we're stuck with flashing lights, etc. John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) directs in strict potboiler mode. Kids still like this movie, though. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, director commentary, optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh
