I loved this movie as a kid and I love it as much at 38. And, for context, I'll say that I consider myself to be a very critical--but open minded--viewer. I just watched Xanadu with my third-grade daughter. The "message" is a perennial one that we all come back to over the course of our lives, both as children and adults: Stay true to your dreams and live life in full technicolor. Perhaps the 80s styles and fads seem silly to some, and others are turned off because they believe that the great Gene Kelly has downgraded himself for this 80's "musical," but I disagree. Xanadu is fun, entertaining, and creative. This isn't a "deep" movie but it is fully enjoyable with a solid message, good music and dancing, and a very appreciated Southern California vibe. A note to parents: In my opinion, there is nothing offensive to children 7 or older, and the subject matter is appropriate as well. Although Xanadu is rated PG, this movie is FAR less objectionable to me than the vast majority of currently-produced films and television programming targeted toward girls ages 6-10, including Hannah Montana and the other Disney franchises.

A wimpy remake of an already anemic movie (the 1947 Rita Hayworth vehicle Down to Earth), this glitzy musical from 1980 improbably stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent here to help open a roller-derby disco. Gene Kelly is mixed up in this well-meaning but goofy effort to fuse nostalgia with late-'70s glitter-ball trendiness, and he looks just plain silly.
